Jennings Plaza & The Commons
Located in the heart of Charlestown, The Commons and City Square are central parks to the city.
Jennings Plaza (City Square)
Jennings Plaza, referred to as the City Square, features a gazebo with bench seats. A veteran's monument was installed in 1993, dedicated to men and women who have honorably served in the military. In 2022, a street clock was installed on the east side of the lawn.
Named after Indiana's first elected Governor, Jonathan Jennings, of Charlestown, Jennings Plaza is the hub of activities throughout the year, from car shows and markets to the popular Charlestown Christmas City animated light show.
The Commons
Opened in 2026, The Commons is a community greenspace featuring a permanent performance stage. The Commons is accessible from Market Street, Water Street, and Short Street, a wonderful gathering spot.
Music in the Park events take place on the stage throughout the warmer seasons along with the annual Founders Week Festival in mid-June. In the summer, the Saturdays on the Square Pop-Up Market takes place in the space.
The space also features a parklet, a perfect spot for a picnic lunch or to read a book at a trio of picnic tables.
History
The City Square dates back to at least 1899. Notably, the site was the first location of the Jonathan Jennings Elementary School and once had a popular fountain.
The Commons space opened in 2026 and, prior to that, was the location of various businesses, including a pool hall, laundry mat, and daycare.
