Founders Week 2023 kicked off on June 20 with the first Brick Building Clinic hosted by the City of Charlestown. Held at Charlestown Middle School, the program came from 11-year-old Charlestown resident Nehemiah Balanean, who wrote a letter to Mayor Treva Hodges asking the city to pursue a Lego Park.
From this idea, the Charlestown Parks team joined with collaborators Maker13, Greater Clark Community Schools Education Foundation, University of Louisville Speed School, Core Construction, Copper Kettle, and Zaxby's of Jeffersonville to put on a Lego build day.
Students were segmented into four groups with the objectives to build their vision of Charlestown's City Square, a re-imagined Rose Island Amusement Park, the new Charlestown Elementary School, and what classrooms would look like within the school's walls.
Students elected leaders of each group along with drew plans on paper before beginning to build. Once construction was complete, the collaborative effort came together to lay out the city in agreement with planners and leaders.
With the aid of 20+ volunteers, 120 students ages 8-12-years-old were able to participate in the event for FREE and have breakfast and lunch provided thanks to Copper Kettle and Zaxby's of Jeffersonville.
The displays will be on site at the Family Activities Park until June 24 for the public to view.
