Charlestown Honors: Armed Forces Banner Program to benefit Charlestown beautification efforts

Updated: Aug 18, 2020

The City of Charlestown’s new Charlestown Honors banner program will recognize active duty and veteran service men and women with recognition banners lining Market Street through Charlestown beginning in September, and running through November 15th. Charlestown Honors banners are full-color, double sided heavy duty vinyl and measure 48” long by 18” wide.

Banners may be sponsored by individuals or businesses at a cost of $65 per banner, and all proceeds raised through the program will benefit future Charlestown beautification efforts. The cost includes the banner and installation, the city covers the cost of the bracketing and hardware. All honorees will also be featured in an online album and via the city’s social media efforts.

Orders are due by September 1st, and may be placed online or in person at City Hall, or by mail. Online payment option is not available at this time, but coming soon!

Applicant honorees must be active duty, retired or honorably discharged members of the United States Armed Forces. All applicants are subject to service verification upon request. Please include the honorees honorable discharge or retirement papers, military ID, or documentation of service dates if at all possible when submitting your application.

Banner spots are available on a first-come basis. Due to space constraints, preference will be given to applicants living in or with ties to Charlestown, or immediate family members of residents. If additional space remains, we will gladly honor other requests as possible on a case-by-case basis.

An official military portrait of the honoree is suggested for this purpose. If such an image is not available, an image of the honoree void of other people or objects can be provided. A high resolution JPG or PNG digital image (600 dpi or greater) is preferred. A high resolution 5” x 7” or larger portrait style photo will be accepted in lieu of a digital image. Please include the photo via attachment on the digital form, email to Media@CityofCharlestown.com with the subject line “Banner Photo + your name” or bring in person to City Hall to be scanned.

Online applications are preferred whenever possible to allow for fastest processing, but paper forms are also available and may be returned by email, in person, or by mail to:

Disclaimer & Limitations

Banners will remain in place until November 15th. Upon removal, the banners will be made available for pickup to the honoree or honoree’s family. You may opt to save your banner to be hung again the following year in exchange for a donation, should the program continue - but please note that there may be some color fading or other wear due to the sun and weather. Specific banner locations will be determined by the city and unfortunately cannot be requested due to logistics and time constraints. Locations with poor visibility (tree coverage, etc) will be avoided to ensure each banner is visible.

The City of Charlestown is not responsible for replacing banners that are stolen, damaged, or destroyed due to age, vandalism, or any acts of nature including high winds. Any loss or damage to an installed banner will be handled on a case by case basis. Banners do fall from time to time, but this is a rare occurrence and our crews check them each day – losses of this nature are very rare. By submitting your photo you agree to your honorees image, name, and related service information being shared publicly on the banner as well as online in the city’s recognition efforts.
